Biological Attraction to Incest
Lots Cave INCEST NEWS: A scientific study recently released in the respect journal ‘Science’, showed scientific proof that marriages between cousins in Iceland tend to produce more children and grandchildren than do marriages between completely unrelated individuals.
While to some people the thought of searching for a mate at a family picnic sounds a bit repulsive, researchers in Iceland found that ’kissing cousins’ produce more children and grandchildren than do couples from unrelated families.
Researchers in Reykjavik Iceland at the deCODE Genetics company, successfully mapped out the kinship structure among all known Icelandic couples whose members were born between 1800 and 1965. They next compared the number of children and grandchildren descended from these 160,811 couples in order to arrive at their startling conclusion.
The deCODE Genetics scientists were shocked to learn that for women born between
1800 and 1824, marriages between cousins produced an average of 4.04 children and
9.17 grandchildren, while marriages between non-
For women born between 1925 and 1949, with mates related at the degree of third cousins, the average number of children and grandchildren were 3.27 and 6.64, compared with 2.45 and 4.86 for those with mates who were eighth cousins, or more distantly related.
"These numbers are totally counterintuitive, and almost dislikable results," explained Dr. Kari Stefansson, the senior author of the scientific paper on the study.
Dislikable, because people’s intuition is that the more closely related a man is to his mate, the higher the chance of passing along a birth defect or some other unfortunate trait that is often associated with inbreeding.
Because the deCODE Genetics sought to eliminate any socioeconomic factors that could influence the number of children a couple might have, they believe their findings do in fact have a strong biological basis.
The deCODE Genetics scientists and researchers believe the trend toward a more numerically superior sexual relationship with a close family relative must have a biological basis, though these scientists have not yet identified exactly what biological mechanism could be behind this interesting finding.
"One of the things you have to realize is that the definition of a species is 'a group of individuals that are sufficiently related to each other to be able to reproduce,'" Dr. Stefansson said. "This definition assumes that individuals that reproduce together have a minimal relationship to each other.”
Dr. Stefansson continued, "But these results show that, in certain situations, there's a certain biological compatibility between couples, which seems good for the fate of future children."
