Perhaps this man was too good to be true. I didn't want to put such a negative spin on things, not after such a delightful evening, yet I must remain realistic. No. I don't believe in love at first sight. I also never considered for one minute during my 18 years in this neighborhood I would find my Crown Prince in this town. Why had I not noticed this worthy male before? Why did he feel so unrecognizable to me, yet left me with complete recognition for a need that this man fill my future?
A million and one questions twirled around in my head, daring me to let one slip. I felt dizzier from wonder than from the effects of alcohol mixing with sexually charged adrenaline streaming throughout my body. I suggested to Chris we make this our last drink, especially tonight. Thankfully, he agreed. We finished our glasses, gathered our coats, and headed off into the secretive cover of night where I felt sure the invigorating spring air would make me feel headier than I could resist. I was correct in my feeling… as soon as the fresh air slammed me I began to tremble. Chris caught me as I quivered nervously, his strong arm taking hold of my waist and drawing me in reassurance toward him.
It felt right. It felt familiar.
"Where are you staying?" Chris inquired as he flagged a taxi down for us.
I still felt tipsy from one too many drinks, but not so tipsy that I missed the incongruity of him asking me the question while already in the process of flagging a taxi down. As it happened, I was staying across the other side of the river—but he wasn't to know my address. Or, if like he'd claimed when we met earlier, and he really was spying on me, then he must already know too much information.
"I'm staying at the Lincolnshire," I deferred. "Where are you staying?"
God! This man exuded confidence. The taxi pulled across several lanes, dodging heavy traffic to come to a halt at the side of the curb immediately in front of us. Chris opened the rear door and waited for me to climb inside first before slipping in beside me. From the instant the taxi began moving to our arrival at the Lincolnshire hotel, we preserved absolute silence; not an uncomfortable silence, but more of an electric silence. It felt intimidating, yet enticing. I didn't feel unsafe with this man even in the slightest, so I meekly went with whatever he directed.
As the taxi pulled up in front of the hotel, Chris leaned over against me and whispered in my ear, "Thank you."
I took this as his "Goodbye", and figured he was thanking me for my company that evening. But as he dropped the driver a twenty and closed the taxi door without getting back inside, I turned back. "You're coming with me?"
"So what was with the ‘Thank you'?"
"I only wanted to say thank you in advance of what we're about to do."
My stomach flipped!"
Perhaps my brother is too good to be true. Why had I not noticed him as a worthy male before? Why does he feel so wrong for me, yet with complete recognition of a need that this man fill my future? A million and one questions twirled in my head… I feel dizzier from wonder than the alcohol mixing with sexually charged adrenaline streaming through my body. It feels right. He feels so familiar.
