“Yes, she...” Hannah wrapped her arms around herself. “She was married off to a man, a man who beat her. I couldn't stand seeing her like that. Every time I saw her she had more bruises on her arms and her legs. I would force her to show them to me because she kept trying to hide it. Then he hit her face, and there was no amount of makeup that could cover it. And I knew that I had to get her free. So, one day, I sneaked into her house and I stole her away. My father's fleet was still at port, so we went out and we grabbed his smallest ship and took off.” Hannah chuckled. “It wasn't completely unloaded, so all we had to do was sail over to a nearby island and sell the goods that were left. Then we had a little coin, so then we were...” Hannah shrugged. “We were free to go where we wanted. I found other women that had been in our situation, and I gave them a way out. Some accepted, most...didn't. But there were enough women that we started to form a crew. And, of course, there isn't a whole lot of work out there for a group of unowned women, so we started pirating.”
“That's quite a story,” Adaeze said. “And your best friend?”
“Cynthia.” Hannah nodded towards the village where Hannah had left her crew. “My first mate, my best friend.”
“Your best friend,” Adaeze repeated. Hannah glanced at her curiously out of the corner of her eye.
Adaeze knew a quicker way through the woods than Hannah did, and soon they were coming out on the other side, in full view of the sun and sea. Hannah's boat was still anchored out from the shore, and the dinghies were still sitting on the beach. Hannah grabbed one and started pushing it out off the sand, and Adaeze quickly joined her inside.
“How long have you been doing this?” Adaeze asked while Hannah rowed.
“A couple years...” Hannah said. She didn't actually remember. The years kind of blended together after a little bit. “Maybe a decade? It's hard to tell.”
“That's a long time to be on the sea.”
“Better than being on land and being forced to marry some man.” Hannah shook her head. “I don't ever want to return to that life. I'll die on the sea before I'll let that happen.”
